Purpose of this job
A great opportunity has opened to join a supportive and collaborative engineering team on a 12‑month fixed term contract, focused on developing, deploying and operating policy‑as‑code controls that enforce hardened baselines across our Azure environments. You will work closely with Security, Risk, Architecture, DevOps and delivery teams to translate standards into Azure Policy definitions and initiatives that are version‑controlled, testable and automated through CI/CD.
The role is Azure‑first, with the ability to extend baseline enforcement patterns to AWS where required. You will champion modern cloud engineering practices, embed governance into Agile ways of working, and help Bupa deliver secure, compliant cloud services at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Policy Engineering & Automation
- Design, develop and maintain policy‑as‑code to enforce hardened cloud baselines across Azure environments.
- Author and manage Azure Policy definitions, initiatives and assignments, including parameterisation, versioning and documentation.
- Build automated remediation and compliance reporting for policy violations (e.g. deployIfNotExists, remediation tasks and dashboards).
- Integrate policy validation and deployment into Azure DevOps pipelines using Terraform, PowerShell and Python (including pull requests, reviews and automated testing).
- Develop reusable modules and patterns (e.g. Terraform modules, policy libraries) to enable consistent enforcement across management groups, subscriptions and environments.
- Contribute to AWS hardened baseline policy development where required, using equivalent governance controls and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.
Cloud Platform Governance & Operations
- Define and maintain cloud governance standards through code aligned to security, compliance and risk requirements.
- Implement preventative and detective controls to enforce configuration baselines and guardrails while supporting safe self‑service.
- Partner with Security, Cloud Operations and Infrastructure Design to translate standards, cloud security baselines and exceptions into enforceable policy.
- Support exception/exemption workflows ensuring decisions are auditable, time‑bound and measurable (e.g. expiry, compensating controls).
- Continuously improve baselines based on audit findings, incidents, platform changes and stakeholder feedback.
Consulting & Collaboration
- Partner with design, product and delivery teams to ensure hardened baselines enable delivery teams while reducing risk.
- Review cloud designs and recommend improvements to align with hardened baselines, resilience and cost optimisation.
- Support project and product teams to modernise and optimise applications while meeting baseline and policy requirements.
- Provide troubleshooting support for policy deployment, compliance drift and remediation activities.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and technology vendors.
Delivery & Ways of Working
- Work within an Agile delivery model, contributing to backlog refinement, sprint planning, showcases/demos and retrospectives.
- Manage policy code in Azure DevOps Repos using branching strategies, pull requests, peer review and coding standards.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that test, validate and safely deploy policy changes (including quality gates and automated checks).
- Produce clear documentation and runbooks for policy controls, exemptions and remediation processes.
What you will need
- Strong experience designing and enforcing cloud governance controls and hardened baselines in enterprise environments.
- Deep hands‑on experience with Azure including management groups, subscriptions, RBAC, identity and Azure Policy.
- Proficiency in Terraform, PowerShell and Python for infrastructure and policy automation.
- Experience with Azure DevOps Repos and Pipelines, including CI/CD for infrastructure and policy‑as‑code with pull requests and code review.
- Strong understanding of source control, modular design, automated testing, and secure engineering practices.
- Experience working in an Agile delivery environment.
- Desirable: Experience contributing to AWS governance and baseline controls (e.g. Organizations, SCPs, Config rules, IAM guardrails).
- Desirable: Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks (e.g. CIS Benchmarks, NIST) and translating requirements into technical controls.
- Microsoft Azure Associate or Expert certification (or willingness to obtain within 6–12 months).
