The purpose of this job
The SQL Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the support and maintenance of Bupa’s Microsoft SQL estate. This role requires strong Microsoft SQL expertise and a willingness to cross-skill in other database technologies, particularly within Azure. The DBA will manage both on-premise and cloud-based database environments across the ANZ Market Unit, ensuring reliability, security, performance, and continuous improvement of database services.
Key Accountabilities
- Ongoing management of all production and non-production databases across on-premise and cloud environments
- Perform standard DBA activities including performance tuning, upgrades, patching, lifecycle management, and data migrations
- Provide SME technical support, design services, and consultation relating to database infrastructure, architecture, access control, data movement, ETL, and synchronisation
- Drive continuous service improvement through automation and orchestration of database environments
Responsibilities
- Adhere to security policies and Bupa’s risk framework to ensure customer data protection
- Deploy and maintain database software in line with internal standards
- Maintain security patch levels in compliance with Bupa SLAs
- Perform development environment refreshes
- Carry out disaster recovery (DR) testing and maintain technical recovery process documentation
- Monitor and manage backups of critical databases, including periodic test restorations
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across production and development environments
- Plan, test, and perform database upgrades
- Maintain documentation for new and updated processes and procedures
- Consult with application and development teams on database design and usage
- Liaise with internal support teams
- Identify suitable uses for new Microsoft SQL feature son-premise and Microsoft database technologies within Azure
- Adhere to Bupa service management processes
- Adopt an automation-first mindset to deliver database capabilities for cloud provisioning and lifecycle management
- Contribute to the review, redesign, and automation of policies, processes, and procedures to improve team productivity and efficiency
- Participate in the Bupa on-call and patching rosters, including out-of-hours work when required
What you’ll need to make it possible
- Industry-based certifications relating to Microsoft SQL, Azure SQL Database, and related technology stacks
- 3–5 years’ industry experience in a similar SQL Database Administrator or Database Engineer role
- Experience using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Microsoft Bicep and/or Terraform to deploy Azure services (or equivalent cloud platforms)
- Experience with CI/CD practices and tools, particularly Microsoft Azure DevOps
