Finding her place in nursing: Hyeju’s journey at Bupa Ashbury
Hyeju joined Bupa Ashbury just three months ago, stepping into her very first nursing role. But it didn’t take long for her presence to be felt.
“She is very eager to learn and do the right thing,” the Ashbury leadership team shared. “Hyeju has a very kind nature, and that’s clearly evident in the way she supports her cohort, especially during their virtual study days.”
Warm, humble, and full of purpose, Hyeju’s early days at Bupa have been filled with meaning.
“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” she says. “I even attended my graduation ceremony in May - it’s such a special time in my life.”
Calling that felt right from the start
Nursing has always been more than just a career choice for Hyeju, it’s been a calling rooted in empathy and deep human connection.
“I’ve always enjoyed listening to people and connecting with them on a deeper level,” she says. “One of the greatest privileges of this profession is being able to support and advocate for your residents - especially when they need someone to stand by them.”
Her path into nursing felt certain from the moment she stepped into her first clinical placement: “I just knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.”
A foundation built on compassion
Coming into the Bupa RN Graduate Program, Hyeju brought with her a strong foundation in clinical care, but it’s been the values-based approach that’s really stood out. “My studies prepared me well, but they also taught me the importance of ethics and compassion,” she explains. “Here at Bupa, I’ve been able to live those values every day. It’s not just about the people we care for, it’s also how we care for each other.”
She’s also found that the most impactful skills aren’t the ones taught in textbooks. “I’ve learned that empathy and compassion help you understand your residents as people with stories, emotions, and needs. That’s what makes person-centred care powerful.”
“And I’ve realised that nursing is a lifelong learning journey. There’s always something new to learn, and that passion for growing helps us give our best every day.”
Aged Care - more than people think
If there’s one message Hyeju wishes more people understood, it’s how vibrant and holistic aged care really is. “Aged care is such a collaborative environment,” she says. “We don’t just focus on physical health; it’s about nutrition, social connection, meaningful activities, and supporting each resident’s sense of identity and worth. Behind all of that is a dedicated team of professionals working together every day to help residents live fully.”
The everyday moments that matter most
For Hyeju, nursing is built on connection. It’s in the little moments - the smile of a resident, a quiet thank you, a shared story, that she finds the greatest meaning. “When residents know you truly care, they open up. They trust you. They believe in you. That connection, that’s the most rewarding part of all.”
In just a few short months, Hyeju has shown what’s possible when passion meets purpose. At Bupa Ashbury, she’s not only growing in her own career, but she’s also making a genuine difference in the lives of those around her.
