We have a clear ambition to be the world's most customer-centric healthcare company. To bring our ambition to life, we’re elevating the focus on digital and data, evolving how we do things to create value for our customers now and into the future.

Our global mission is to help our customers live healthier and happier lives. Just imagine the impact you could make!

Join Bupa as our next Design Manager – Design Systems, where you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of how customers experience Bupa digitally. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a high-performing design systems team, driving consistency, accessibility, and quality across our enterprise digital ecosystem. As a key people leader and systems strategist, you’ll partner across design, engineering, and product teams to scale best-in-class design practices and evolve a robust, multi-brand design system that supports every digital touchpoint—from web to native apps.

Reporting to the Head of Experience Design, this is a newly created 12-month fixed term position (with the potential to go perm) and can be based in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane. Bupa offers a hybrid working environment, with 2 days in office per week and the remainder from home. This role manages a team of 8 comprised of native and web systems designers, visual design specialists and leads.

How will you make an impact?

You’ll be the architect of our digital design system—building the foundations that power all our customer experiences. Your leadership will help deliver cohesive, accessible, and brand-aligned interfaces that make our digital products feel intuitive and trustworthy at every interaction.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of system-focused designers across web and mobile platforms.
  • Guide the strategic evolution and daily operations of Bupa’s design system.
  • Align design system strategy across web and native mobile platforms, ensuring platform-native excellence.
  • Embed standards and quality assurance frameworks, including WCAG accessibility guidelines.
  • Monitor feedback loops and evolve the system based on enterprise-wide needs and usage patterns.
  • Champion accessibility, governance, and consistency across all digital experiences.
  • Collaborate deeply with engineers and product teams to bring design components to life.
  • Oversee resourcing, hiring, and team capability to meet the needs of evolving product portfolios.

About You

This role is ideal for a seasoned design systems leader with a strategic mindset, deep technical understanding, and a passion for high-quality, accessible digital design. You're energised by complex challenges, comfortable navigating enterprise-scale environments, and have a proven ability to build collaborative, high-performing teams.

Key skills and experience required:

  • 7+ years’ experience in digital design across web and native mobile (iOS/Android) platforms
  • 5+ years working hands-on with design systems at scale, including building component libraries
  • Strong leadership experience with a track record of mentoring and growing teams
  • Deep knowledge of visual design, interaction patterns, and digital accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Experience working in Agile and cross-functional teams, ideally within multi-brand environments
  • Technical fluency—comfortable partnering with engineers and understanding front-end frameworks like React
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience leading change
  • A strategic thinker who can plan, prioritise, and deliver value through scalable design solutions

What’s in it for you?

As well as a competitive salary, a range of Bupa benefits and flexible working/work from home arrangements, you’ll be encouraged to innovate. You will be collaborating with various teams to deliver exceptional experiences. You will have the opportunity to further learn and develop with excellent internal development courses available and a supportive career development environment. We trust, respect, and consider everyone, knowing your difference will make the difference.

Ban the asterisk

Our customers have told us that our products can be confusing and complex when we add an asterisk (*) with fine print in our policies. To respond to our customers’ needs, in 2020 the Product Deisgn Squad was created to make our products simpler, more relecant and personalised. Here’s how putting our customers at the heart of everything helped the team ban the *.
