What is the RN Graduate Program?

The RN Graduate Program provides a supportive introduction to Aged Care and focuses on the quality development of newly registered RNs. The program runs for 12-months and includes mentorship, professional development days (PDD), buddy shifts and rostering guidelines.

Following the initial 12-months, RNs will have access to apply to continue their learning by completing the 2nd year program to further their clinical development.

How is the RN Graduate Program structured?

The first year of Bupa’s RN Graduate Program will include three 1-month placements covering key areas of Aged Care. Each placement includes Professional Development Days (PDD) which are delivered virtually or in-person, and buddy shifts to allow the RN to apply their new learning.

The second year includes a 3-month rotation through an acute care setting. Following this rotation, RNs will return to the Care Home and work on a Quality Improvement Project with a presentation at the end of the year. In addition, this year will see a hyper-focus on Leadership with in-charge shifts and involvement with the Wellness Hub model of care.

The components of the program are indicative only and may change. Speak to us about the current program inclusions when you apply for the program.

Who is eligible for the program?

All first year RNs hired or promoted within a care home in any recruitment process. That is any candidate with less than 12 months RN experience. Candidate cannot be hired as Casual and must be hired on a minimum of 24 hours contract.

Eligibility for the Extension Program (Year 2) will be based on performance and capability in Year 1, with endorsement from Care Home Leadership required. As spaces are limited, assessment centres will occur mid-year 1 to assess suitability to program. RNs joining the Extension Program are required to work fulltime.

Why are we offering this Program in our Care Homes?

To ensure RNs are equipped to provide the best care to Bupa residents, and to provide a start to their nursing career that may lead to future clinical leadership and operational management roles.

How many intakes will there be?

Across the year, there will be four intakes of the Aged Care Essentials program including February, May, August, and November.

Where are the Programs based, and can a Care Home have more than one RN Grad?

This program is being offered nationally. Bupa Care Home Managers will express their interest. It is possible for a Care Home to have more than one RN Grad, providing they can meet the rostering requirements to do so (including Mentor & 1:1 buddy shifts).

How many hours a week will the RN Grad be working?

Ideally 38 hours, however a minimum of 24 hours. Any offer less than 24 hours will require Regional Manager and Head of Education & Development approval. RNs with less than 12-months experience cannot be hired on a casual basis.

How will the roster work?

Across the 12-months, RNs will have scheduled study days and buddy shifts. In addition to this, RNs will work Mon-Fri to ensure support of the Care Home Leadership Team. RNs with less than 12-months experience are not to be in-charge.

Who can be a Mentor?

Expert clinicians working in the same Care Home as the RN Grad. Mentors may be a Quality Education Manager (QEM), Care Manager (CM) or a Senior RN.

What is the Care Home’s Responsibility?

  • Rostering of the RN as per the program guidelines
  • Candidate must be made available for all PDD days, and no leave scheduled during this time.
  • Assisting to book travel where required for in person PDD with the Quality Education Team
  • Nominating Mentor
  • Choosing appropriate & competent RNs for buddy shifts
  • Communicating with the Head of Education & Development if further guidance or assistance is required, or to discuss changes to the roster/contract
  • Monitor overall team roles & responsibilities throughout the program

What are the RN Graduate Expectations inc. key measurables?

Each RN is expected to demonstrate active engagement throughout all aspects of the programs, including PDDs and monthly check-ins. Key measurables include attendance, engagement, competency assessments and self-paced learning. Each RN will work through their provided Professional Development Learner Card.

What happens at the end of the program?

Upon successful completion of the first 12-months of the program, RNs will continue in their RN positions, having met BVAC’s employment criteria and standards. They can then apply for the extension program and a second year of clinical development and tailored support.
