Our global mission is to help our customers live healthier and happier lives. Just imagine the impact you could make!
We’re looking for a Design System Governance Lead to help shape and safeguard the future of Bupa’s digital experience. You’ll be instrumental in maintaining the integrity, consistency, and quality of Bupa’s design system across web and mobile platforms. Reporting to the Design Manager – Design Systems, this is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll define and manage the rules that ensure every design component, we deliver is accessible, scalable, and aligned with our brand and experience standards. You’ll play a central role in making sure our design system evolves with intention, supports our teams, and remains a trusted source of truth.
This is a newly created 12-month fixed term position (with the potential to go perm) and can be based in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane. Bupa offers a hybrid working environment, with 2 days in office per week and the remainder from home.
How will you make an impact?
You’ll be the governance engine of Bupa’s design system—setting the standards, versioning strategies, and community contributions that power consistent and accessible digital experiences across our brands and platforms.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Own the structure, versioning, and quality control of our Figma libraries and design artefacts
- Define governance frameworks and best practices that ensure component integrity and platform consistency.
- Enable a scalable, community-driven contribution model that supports collaboration and innovation.
- Partner with designers and engineers to align design and code through governance rituals and tooling.
- Audit design system health and adoption, ensuring ongoing alignment with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2)
- Lead documentation and communication practices that make the system easy to use and understand.
- Facilitate contributor training, onboarding, and forums to foster system adoption and engagement.
- Bridge cross-functional teams to resolve blockers, align direction, and embed governance in the delivery lifecycle.
About You
You’re a systems thinker who thrives on structure, quality, and collaboration. You’ve worked with design systems at scale, love creating clarity from complexity, and have a passion for raising the bar on product craft. This role is perfect for someone who wants to lead from the ground—embedded with teams and driving impact through operational excellence.
Key skills and experience required:
- 5+ years of experience working with web and native mobile design systems in enterprise environments.
- Expert knowledge of design governance, semantic versioning, and Figma library management.
- Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and platform-specific guidelines.
- A detail-oriented mindset with strong visual design skills and a systems thinking approach.
- Demonstrated success implementing governance frameworks and contribution models across teams.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills with a knack for making complex processes simple.
- Proficiency in modern design tools like Figma, Storybook, and documentation platforms
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in Agile environments to embed design system practices at scale.
What’s in it for you?
As well as a competitive salary, a range of Bupa benefits and flexible working/work from home arrangements, you’ll be encouraged to innovate. You will be collaborating with various teams to deliver exceptional experiences. You will have the opportunity to further learn and develop with excellent internal development courses available and a supportive career development environment. We trust, respect, and consider everyone, knowing your difference will make the difference.
